Rules

In the world of fashion, there are some basic ground rules one should abide by. Here they are, in my own words. Print it out. It's your fashion Bible...study it!

1. Comfort. Always keep your comfort first and foremost. Suffering for fashion is a bunch of baloney--no one looks comfy when they're stuffed into a pleather minidress and stillettos. A baggy sweatshirt, jeans and sneakers are much more becoming, because it's natural and real. Plus, you'll feel better...and when you feel better, you definitely look better!

2. Lifestyle. Dress according to what you do in life...obviously. (Of course, some people don't get this. It's important, though.) Pop divas like Britney and Christina dress with flair and drama when you see them because they're stars. Now, there's nothing wrong with dressing to the hilt, but remember, most of the time, normal teenagers are in school, not working the catwalk. You should be wearing Abercrombie, not Versace.

3. Be original. Come on, guys, you can do it. I know you can. Find something no one else is wearing (yet!) that YOU love, and wear it, and work it. Being trendy is natural, but to really stand out from a sea of look-alikes, you have to have your own style. Accent your outfits with great accessories, like standout jewelry or a funky scarf. It puts a twist on your style that's completlely you.

4. Seek inspiration. Look no further, you've found it here.

5. If you've got it, flaunt it. There's positively no shame in showing off.

6. Confidence. It's totally all in the way you carry yourself.

7. Let old trends go. If no one else is wearing last season's styles, maybe you should stop, too. Wearing stuff that's timeless, like baby tees and bootleg jeans, is okay, but don't get caught in 1997's butterfly clips and side-stripe jeans. Ever.

8. Don't listen to your boyfriend. Their reasons for you to wear the clothes are often different than what you want. Don't let them limit you to what they'll "allow" you to wear. Ultimately, follow your own tastes. Do let him pick a special outfit he loves you in, and wear it when you wanna see him drool.

#6: Confidence is key. Hold yourself high!

9. Wear clothes that fit. It seems obvious, but some girls always go either too tight or too baggy. You should avoid both extremes. Clothes look best when they fit more snugly, because you can show off your curves that way. On the other hand, clothes that are a bit loose (especially dresses and floaty tops) create a beautiful drape, which can also flaunt your figure. Clingy, "suck-it-all-in" type clothing doesn't flatter, and neither does oversized clothing.

10. Don't follow trends. Especially at your school. Because who wants to look like everyone else? Try to think of things you like rather than what's hot at the moment. Of course it's a lot of fun to be trendy and on top of the styles. So if you're in love with the hot new stuff, go for it. If there's a trend you hate, then for God's sakes, don't wear it! I just hate the Boho-chic, hippieish, neutral-natural styles (for the most part) that have been in recently. Lots of people wear the stuff, and I can't because it revolts me. It seems like common sense--just don't worry about what's in style.

I am often inspired more by what people wore in the 60's and 70's than today. To get ideas, read fashion magazines and clip out looks that drive you insane, then try to recreate them yourself. Go to a thrift store and buy vintage--that's what celebs do. Raid your mom's closet for hip-huggers, prom dresses, cool belts and johnny-collar polos that she had back in the day. What's always in for me? Crude glamour, pink, denim, black eyeliner and sparkles. :p

11. Start something. Be the fashion plate at your school by being standout to everyone else. Make them want to emulate your style by polishing your look with some new pieces. And remember, the most important fashion accessory is a smile. :)
